Problems with Air Conditioners
There are many components in an AC unit that could break and require repair. Numerous problems could be avoided with a regular service from a skilled technician employed by K&S Heating and Air. During service, many checks are carried out, and potential problems are eliminated before the need for an expensive air conditioner repair. Even a well-maintained AC unit could still break down, but there are some tell-tale signs you should be on the alert for to avoid this:
- Reduced airflow from the unit.
- Larger than expected energy bills.
- strange noises from the unit.
- Strange smells coming from the unit.
- Weak cooling from the unit
- The pooling of water around the unit
If you experience any of these issues, then you probably will need an air conditioner repair at some point. The longer you wait the greater the chance that you will increase the cost of the repair.
What is the cause of these Problems?
There could be many causes for the problems listed above.
Coolant Levels Are Low
Each AC unit will need an optimum level of coolant for maximum efficiency. A leak will reduce that level and decrease the cooling effect of the unit. This means that the components in the AC units will have to work harder to maintain the desired temperature.
Harder working components are more likely to burn out and need an expensive air conditioner repair. Even if the components do not burn out your AC unit will be using more electricity and your energy bills will be higher. A service from K&S Heating and Air will ensure that the coolant level is correct.
Evaporator Coil Is Frozen
Low coolant levels can cause frost and ice to form on the evaporator coil and could even cause it to freeze completely. The evaporator coil absorbs the excess heat and humidity from any warm air blown over it.
The coolant is in a liquid form but changes to a gas state after it absorbs the heat. If there is a reduction in the amount of warm air blown over the coil, then this too could result in frost and ice forming on the coil.
If the air filter is dirty, it will restrict the airflow. Replacing the dirty air filter is one of the tasks completed in any service of the AC unit from a K&S technician. The evaporator coil can also get dirty over time, and this too is cleaned during a service.
Dirty and Blocked Condensers
The hot gas is pumped through the AC unit where it passes through the condenser and cooling fins located outside. A fan blows the outside air over the condenser and fins and absorbs the heat from the gas.
The gas cools and changes back into a cold liquid and continues back inside to the evaporator coil, and the cycle repeats. Unless enough air is blown over the condenser and cooling fin too little heat will be transferred to the air and the cooling effect will be reduced.
Dirt that collects on the condenser and coil will also reduce the heat transfer and so they will need periodic cleaning. Failure to clean could result in the condenser and other components overworking and maybe burning out. The result is an air conditioner repair.
Problems with fans – a faulty fan will cause the airflow over the evaporator coil, condenser, and cooling fins. This will result in reduced cool air from the unit. A faulty fan may be the cause of strange noises coming from your AC unit. A clunking sound can mean a loose or bent blade hitting the inside of your unit. A screeching sound can suggest a worn-out fan belt.
Leaking Ducts – any damage to the air duct will result in cool air escaping. Up to 30 percent of an AC unit’s energy is lost in this way, meaning higher energy costs for you.
Thermostat Issues – incorrect placed or uncalibrated thermostats will make the AC unit work harder, increasing your energy bills. Placing thermostats in direct sunlight or near open windows is a bad idea.
Clogged AC Drain Line – the moisture from the humid air usually goes to a pan in your AC. This flows outside through an AC drain line. The humid conditions can cause mold and mildew to grow inside the line and block it.
This clogged line will increase the humidity levels indoors, create a musty smell, and cause any moisture to back up into the AC unit, and cause pooling of water around it.
Ignoring any of these problems is only storing up worse problems for the future. Any component that is not working properly has a knock-on effect causing the other components to work harder, which will lead to higher energy bills, or even a breakdown needing an air conditioner repair.
The Age of your AC Unit – Older units will break down more often. Even a well-maintained one will need replacing every 10 to 15 years. With such a bewildering choice of models on the market, let K&S help you decide which is best for all of the community in Rockwall, TX.
