It may seem odd that your air conditioner can break down on a hot summer’s day because the evaporator coils freeze! A fan takes warm air from inside your home and blows it over the coils. The coolant inside the coils absorbs the heat from the warm air and the chilled air is then blown back into your home.
To prevent the coils from freezing they need a constant supply of warm air to be blown over them. Dirty air filters will restrict the airflow over the coils and so they need periodic cleaning or replacing. Another cause of frost or ice forming on the coils is a reduced level of coolant.
These factors will not only reduce the amount of cool air coming from your unit but will increase the chance that the coils will freeze over. Once the coils have frozen over your air conditioner will need to be turned off for up to 24 hours to allow the coils to thaw. Repeated freezing of the coils increases the risk of an air conditioner repair.
Humidity Levels Are Increased
Warm air contains more moisture than cold air, If the air blown back into your home is warmer than you expect, it will contain more moisture and will be more humid.
A faulty fan will also restrict the airflow over the coils. You should listen for weird sounds coming from the unit, particularly the fan. Any sounds strange, like grinding, or squealing sounds could indicate you have a worn-out fan belt or bearings. Any loud banging sounds could be due to a loose or bent blade hitting the inside of your unit.
Puddles of Water on the Floor Around the Air Conditioner
The most likely cause of these puddles is a blocked AC drain line. When the heat from the warm air is absorbed by the coolant, the excess moisture is collected in the drain pan. It then flows outside via the AC drain line. This excess moisture gives rise to conditions that encourage the growth of moss and algae in the drain pan and line.
This could block both so the water in the drain pan will overflow into the unit and then onto your floor. This will increase the level of humidity in your home and could cause the air conditioner to shut down.
