Furnace Components

Central heating systems depend on a primary heating appliance, such as a furnace. The furnace is usually located in the basement or garage of the home. Furnaces have four main components. Those components are as follows:

  1. Burners – The burner in a furnace is what delivers and burns the fuel. The burner’s purpose is to heat the heat exchanger.
  2. Heat Exchangers – The heat exchanger is a series of tubes or coils that are looped through the air flow within the furnace. The heat exchanger’s purpose is to heat the air in the home.
  3. Blower – The blower, located within the furnace, is the source of pressure that pushes air over the heat exchanger, producing warm air that is pushed through the ductwork to the rooms in the home.
  4. Flue – The flue is the pipe that exhausts hazardous gases away from the living spaces in your home. This is typically routed to the roof of the home.

How Central Heating Works

Central heating systems distribute heated air throughout the home either by pumping warm air through a series of air ducts or by sending hot water or steam through pipes to radiators or convectors located in individual rooms. The most common type uses ducted air systems. If you have an air conditioner, heat pump, or furnace in your Dallas home, then you have a ducted air system. There are two main types of systems: forced air and gravity.

With the first main type, a forced-air system, a furnace will warm the air, an AC unit will cool the home, a heat pump with either warm or cool the air, and then a blower will force the heated or cooled air through the system and into the rooms or zones of the home. The second main type, a gravity furnace, utilizes convection currents to distribute heated air throughout the system from a furnace that will be installed either on the main floor or below it. A gravity system does not utilize blowers and can only deliver warmed air to living spaces.

If your Dallas home’s system has an air conditioner or heat pump, then it is a forced air system. Usually, cool air will be delivered through the same ductwork as heated air. The air conditioning component of your system typically operates on electricity and removes heat from the surrounding air by the same basic principles as refrigeration.

A heat pump can not only provide heating but cooling as well. During cold weather, a heat pump will extract heat from the outside air and distribute the warm air indoors. During hot weather, the heat pump will extract heat from indoor air and purge it outdoors. Heat pumps are usually operated by electricity. A heat pump will have an outdoor compressor that is connected to an indoor air handler via tubing that is filled with refrigerant. When the refrigerant flows through the system, it warms or cools the coils inside of the air handler. Then the blower within the unit will pull in indoor air, dispersing it over the coils and then distributing the air back into the living space through ductwork. On extremely cold days, electric-resistant elements will turn on inside of the air handler adding extra heat to the air that is flowing through the system.
