What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a mechanical system that produces either heated or cooled air and distributes it throughout your home.  Installation of a heat pump typically composes of two parts. These two parts are called the indoor unit, more commonly referred to as the air handler, and the outdoor unit, which is similar to that of a central air conditioner, but is more commonly referred to as the heat pump.  A compressor will distribute refrigerant throughout the system that is absorbed and then releases warm air that flows into the home.

How does a Heat Pump Work?

When there is cold weather, the heat pump will extract the heat from the outside air and transfer that heat indoors.  When there is hot weather, the heat pump will work in reverse directions, extracting warm air out of the indoor air.  One of the advantages of a heat pump is that it moves heat rather than having to generate it. This means higher energy efficiency, and less electricity costs.   A heat pump, is powered by electricity. Heat pumps are better suited for moderate climates, in areas where it can get rather cold, a supplemental heat system will be needed.

Different Types of Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps – these types of pumps are suitable for moderate climates. Normally these pumps are installed on the side of the house, drawing the outside air in by transferring the heat from the air via compression and two coils that are made of conductive copper tubing.  Air source heat pumps are high-efficiency systems that can provide great savings on electric bills.

Ground Source Heat Pumps – Ground source heat pumps as implied by the name draws heat from the ground in order to warm homes.  Ground source heat pumps, also known as geothermal heat pumps, have higher efficiencies than air sourced heat pumps. This is due to the fact that at a certain depth, temperatures underground generally are more constant. There are different types of ground source heat pumps. These types are horizontal array, vertical, and water-source.

Hybrid Array Heat Pump – This is a heat pump that also uses another energy source such as a boiler. Together the hybrid system provides a more constant supply of warm air and at a higher level of energy efficiency.

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps – these are individual units that are usually installed on the wall or ceiling. These types of systems are advantageous due to the fact that they do not require any ducts to distribute heat into rooms. These types of systems are suitable when retrofitting homes.

Absorption Heat Pumps – An absorption heat pump works by using another heat source such as solar heated water or geothermal heated weather rather than electricity.
