A summer in Dallas can be very hot and humid. Temperatures can be as high as 100-degrees Fahrenheit and do not cool off much in the evenings. If you have underlying health problems or are very young and elderly these can be dangerous times. Having the air conditioner fail can give rise to people suffering from dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. A poorly maintained air conditioner will allow dust, pollen, and allergens to enter your home and cause distress for people with asthma or other respiratory problems.

Your air conditioner must be working correctly allowing you to breathe cool and clean air, and lower humidity will make your lives bearable. Should anything go wrong is it critical that you find a trustworthy air conditioner repair service that will come to fix your problem quickly. The longer you wait for a repair the more dangerous the situation can become. A business owner also wants to keep their staff secure and keep any perishable items like medicines safe.

The people of Dallas, TX. have been choosing K&S Heating & Air for an air conditioner repair service for many years. We are a family-owned business and understand that is a troubling time for you and your family, so we promise to respond quickly to any emergency.

Signs That You Will Need an Air Conditioner Repair

Without regular servicing, you increase the risk of your unit breaking down and needing an expensive air conditioner repair. There are some warning signs you should be aware of:

  • Larger than normal energy bills
  • The evaporator coil has frost or ice forming on it
  • Less cold air is coming out
  • The unit makes strange noises.
  • You can smell coolant around the unit

If you spot any of these signs you may need an air conditioner repair soon and you need to call K&S.

What Causes These Problems?

Frozen Evaporator Coils

The evaporator coil absorbs the excess heat from the air in your room. It makes use of a volatile coolant that changes state from a cold liquid to a hot gas when the warm air is blown over it. To work effectively, the evaporator coil needs continuous airflow across it.

By reducing the airflow, the evaporator coil can freeze. As it begins to freeze the other parts in the AC unit must work harder to compensate. This extra work drives up your energy costs and causes more wear and tear on the unit. This can cause components to burn out needing an air conditioner repair.

Dirty Air Filters and Blocked Air Grilles

A dirty air filter needs to be regularly replaced. As it gets dirty it will reduce the airflow across the evaporator coil. It will allow more dust and dirt to enter the AC unit to cover the coil.

The coil needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent any build-up of dirt. The dirt layer will act as an insulator reducing the heat transfer between the warm air and coolant in the evaporator coil. Blocked air grilles will have the same effect and will also need to be cleaned often.

Coolant Is Leaking

Less coolant will lower the cooling effect and you may notice that there is less cold air coming from your unit. There needs to be an optimum level of coolant in your unit. Any leakage will reduce this level and have knock-on problems like causing the evaporator coil to freeze. The AC unit will also need to work harder to maintain the same level of cold air output.

If you can hear a hissing sound or smell a sweet, chloroform-like odor the leak is bad, and you need an air conditioner repair from one of K&S’s skilled technicians.

Dirty Condenser and Cooling Fins

The condenser and cooling fins are located outside your home and will get covered in dirt and grime. Moss and weeds can also grow on them, and they need a good clean every so often. If you do not do this then the insulation layer formed by the dirt will reduce the heat transfer from the condenser and cooling fins to the outside air.

The condenser also needs constant airflow over it to work effectively. Any blockages will reduce that airflow will result in the condenser working harder and it may even burn out.

Fan Problems

A faulty fan will also reduce the airflow over the evaporator coil and condenser. Over time a fan can work itself loose and can strike the inside of your unit making a thumping sound. Eventually, the blades will be bent or broken.

The fans need an electric motor to run, and these can overheat and burn out. A worn-out fan belt can cause any screeching sound you may hear. A regular service can pick up on these problems before they become too serious. Also, wires can fray, become loose, and become disconnected, and this too will be picked up in a service.

Thermostat Issues

A poorly calibrated thermostat can cause your AC unit to overwork. It will believe the temperature to be higher or lower than it is and will cause the air conditioner to work harder to maintain the temperature.
