Another widespread problem is short cycling. To obtain the maximum cooling effect from your HVAC, the compressor needs to work to the correct cooling cycle for your unit. Normally, the cooling cycle is ten minutes for the compressor to be switched on and another ten minutes where it is switched off. Frost and Ice Appears on the Evaporator Coils
It may seem like a paradox to see frost and ice appearing on the evaporator coils on a hot summer’s day. But the fact is that the coils need a certain amount of heat to avoid freezing. The heat is provided by the warm air from inside your home, blown over the coils by the fan.
If this airflow is restricted in any way, for example by dirty air filters or a problem with the fan, you will start to see frost and ice appearing on the coils. Another reason for the frost and ice forming is that there is not enough coolant in the evaporator coils. Without enough coolant, insufficient heat will be absorbed by the coils, and heating and AC repair will be required as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
By allowing the frost and ice to build up, you increase the chance that the evaporator coils will completely freeze over. If this is allowed to happen your air conditioner will shut down. It will be out of action for up to 24-hour as the evaporator coils thaw out. This is not something you want to happen when the temperatures outside are over one hundred degrees. If the coils freeze over repeatedly you will need expensive heating and AC repair.
